The American dog tick, also called the wood tick, is commonly seen across the U.S., except in the Rocky Mountains. They are brown with grayish-white patches and can grow from 3/16” to 5/8” when engorged. Their oval, flattened bodies have six legs as larvae and eight legs as adults.
These ticks mainly target dogs but can bite humans, transmitting diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Spring and early summer are the peak seasons for these ticks. Checking pets and maintaining a tidy lawn are key to reducing the likelihood of an infestation.
The reddish-brown Brown Dog Tick commonly affects domestic dogs and is widespread in the U.S., especially in warm Californian areas. While they prefer dogs, Brown Dog Ticks can bite humans if a dog is not available.
As adults, these ticks measure about 1/8″ but can grow to 1/2″ after feeding. Larvae have six legs, while nymphs and adults have eight. It’s important to remove ticks from pets swiftly to avoid potential health problems. Regular pet inspections and keeping living spaces clean help in controlling tick infestations.
The Pacific Coast tick thrives in shrublands and along trails from Oregon to Baja California, making it common in Natomas’ outdoor regions. Active during cooler months like April and May, these ticks bite a variety of hosts, including humans. Adult ticks prefer feeding on larger mammals, such as cattle, deer, and horses, but they will also bite dogs and people.
These ticks are known to transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. Tick-bite paralysis is a risk for livestock. Up to 11% of adult Pacific Coast ticks carry bacteria responsible for Pacific Coast tick fever, which can be mistaken for Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
The Western Black-Legged Tick is widely distributed along the Pacific Coast, including in British Columbia. It is a primary carrier of Lyme disease in these regions. This tick species is found in forests, grasslands, and around water bodies, and may also thrive in scrub-shrub habitats. Though related to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick, it primarily resides on the West Coast.
Adult ticks are most active between early winter and early summer, while nymphs peak in the spring. Nymphs feed on small animals, such as lizards and rodents, and rarely bite humans or pets. Keeping your yard clean and maintaining vegetation can help prevent tick infestations.
At Natomas Pest Control, our tick control service starts with a detailed inspection of your property. Our technician will examine areas such as tall grass, dense shrubs, and shaded spots, which are typical tick breeding grounds, to ensure effective treatment.
We’ll also take note of where your pets spend time, as these areas are often hotspots for ticks. This precise inspection enables us to craft a personalized treatment plan that eliminates ticks and safeguards your home.
We kick off our tick control process by understanding your preferences—whether indoor, outdoor, or both areas require treatment. For families with pets, we typically recommend treating both to ensure thorough protection. This tailored approach meets your property’s needs.
Next, our technician inspects your yard for tick hotspots. We treat up to half an acre using moisture-activated granules that work long-term. If your yard is larger, additional coverage is available for a small fee. Indoors, we apply treatment using a B&G sprayer for precision.
We include a free follow-up two weeks after your initial tick treatment to handle any newly hatched ticks. Our technician will inspect the indoor and outdoor areas that were treated, ensuring no tick activity remains.
If necessary, we’ll reapply treatments to break the tick life cycle and prevent further infestations. Our goal is to maintain a tick-free home and yard for the safety of your pets and loved ones.
We’re dedicated to Natomas and its neighboring regions. Our team works diligently to protect homes and businesses from pests. We care about these communities and strive to provide top-quality service and results.
